Dear Autism Parents: You Deserve Rest, Too

Let’s be real: parenting an autistic child is a full-time job—and then some. It’s easy to put your needs on the back burner between therapy appointments, school meetings, and managing meltdowns. But here’s the truth: you can’t pour from an empty cup. Taking care of yourself isn’t selfish; it’s essential. Let’s talk about why rest matters and how you can carve out moments of peace in your busy life.

Why Rest Is Non-Negotiable

Parenting burnout is real. When you’re constantly in “go mode,” your mental, emotional, and physical health can take a hit. Rest isn’t just about sleep (though important)—it’s about giving yourself permission to pause, recharge, and breathe.

Small Ways to Recharge

  • Micro-Breaks: Take 5 minutes to sip coffee in silence, stretch, or close your eyes. These tiny pauses can make a big difference.
  • Ask for Help: Don't be afraid to lean on others, Whether a partner, family member, or respite care. You don’t have to do it all alone.
  • Create a Ritual: Find one thing that brings you joy, like reading a book, taking a bath, or listening to music, and make it a daily habit.

Let Go of Guilt

It’s easy to feel guilty for taking time for yourself, but remember: you’re a better parent when you’re rested and recharged. Your child needs you at your best, starting with prioritizing your well-being.
